Melatonin

Melatonin - is one of the hormones of the pineal gland. Melatonin is involved in circadian rhythm and regulation of diverse body functions. Melatonin has been used for jet lag, delayed sleep phase syndrome, insomnia in elderly, sleep enhancement in healthy people, alzheimer's disease (sleep disorders), anesthesia (adjunct therapy), antioxidant (free radical scavenging), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), benzodiazepine tapering, bipolar disorder (sleep disturbances), chronic fatigue syndrome, depression (sleep disturbances), headache prevention, insomnia (of unknown origin in the non-elderly), periodic limb movement disorder, preoperative sedation / anxiolysis, REM sleep behavior disorder, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Taking melatonin orally helps improve circadian rhythm sleep disorders in blind children and adults. Melatonin has FDA orphan drug status for this indication.

Valerian

Valerian -commonly known as Valeriana officinalis. It has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Valerian has long been used for sleep disorders, headaches, depression, irregular heartbeat, trembling, restlessness and anxiety.

Most research shows that taking valerian orally reduces the time to sleep onset (sleep latency), and improves subjective sleep quality. The greatest benefit is usually seen in patients using 400-900 mg valerian extract up to 2 hours before bedtime.

Hops

Hops - are used primarily as flavoring and stabilizing beer. Hops are used in other beverages, as well as, herbal medicines. Hops may cause sleepiness and drowsiness. Animal studies report that hops may have sedative and sleep-enhancing (hypnotic) effects. Hops have been used traditionally as a sedative, for relaxation and reduction of anxiety.

Taking a combination product containing hops extract 41.9 mg plus valerian extract 187 mg per tablet, two tablets at bedtime, seems to modestly improve subjective sleep measures including subjective sleep latency compared to placebo after 28 days of treatment; however it was not significantly better than placebo after only 14 days of treatment.

Lavender

Lavender - The fresh or dried flowers of the lavender plant are used for medicinal purposes. It is known for its aromatic fragrance but is also considered a natural remedy for a range of ailments, from insomnia and anxiety to depression and mood disturbances. Recent studies bear out years of anecdotal evidence showing that lavender produces calming, soothing, and anticonvulsive effects. According to some research, lavender may be as effective as certain barbiturates in treating sleep disorders.

Lavender seems to induce relaxation and sedation. Lavender decreases EEG potentials and decreases alertness in humans.

Passion Flower

Passion Flower - grows on long vines in shaded, woody areas of the United States. Passion flower has a tranquilizing effect, including mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects. The sedative effect of Passion flower has made it popular for treating a variety of ailments, including nervousness and insomnia. It also has an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles within the body, including the digestive system, promoting digestion.

Passionflower has sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects.

Chamomile

Chamomile - Chamomile is a well known tea herb. Chamomile has been used orally to reduce flatulence and/or diarrhea due to a nervous stomach, to reduce stomach upset, to treat travel sickness, to produce mild sedation, to reduce restlessness and irritability, to treat the common cold, to treat fevers, to reduce cough, for liver and gallbladder complaints, and to increase appetite.

The constituent(s) responsible for the sedative activity of German chamomile are unclear. Some preliminary research suggests that apigenin can bind to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. GABA receptors are the primary receptor sites of benzodiazepines in the central nervous system. However, other research suggests that apigenin doesn't affect GABA receptors, and other constituents of German chamomile are responsible for the sedative activity.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm - Lemon Balm is best known for its calming properties, and has been used for centuries as a mild form of drugs like benzodiazepines. Lemon balm has been used for sleep problems (insomnia), nervousness, and for stomach problems.

Taking a specific combination product providing lemon balm leaf extract 80 mg and valerian root extract 160 mg three times daily appears to improve the quality and quantity of sleep in healthy people.

Skullcap

Skullcap - Skullcap is a powerful medicinal herb, it is used in alternative medicine as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and sedative. Skullcap is used in the treatment of a wide range of nervous conditions including epilepsy, insomnia, and anxiety.

Skullcap's effects on the serotonin receptor may be involved in potential sedative properties.

It is thought that the flavonoid constituents of skullcap might act as GABA agonists and therefore have a sedating and anxiolytic effect.
